People
Some interesting and important people you may meet at Girton...
Students
Freshers' Committee
The people working hard to help you settle in and have fun when you get here.
JCR Committee
The people elected to represent you to college and to keep your stay at Girton running smoothly.
CUSU
Every Girton student is automatically a member of CUSU. CUSU is an organisation made up of every College JCR, and represents students' interests at a university level, providing central services and support students and College JCRs. CUSU is run on day basis by five full time officers, known as sabbaticals, who are students taking a year off from their studies in order to work for CUSU. It is headed up by Tom Chigbo, the CUSU president. CUSU provides a range of important services such as the free mail service between colleges, the Annual Freshers' Fair and study skill sessions amongst other things. CUSU also provides loads of support and information for those with welfare or academic enquiries, as well as selling and hiring useful stuff to student at subsidised rates (eg. Stationary, technical equipment). CUSU also runs a number of campaigns relating to access, discrimination and other issues affecting students and applicants. Societies
There are a huge number of student-run societies in Cambridge, some based in college and some based in the wider university. No matter what you want to do there is probably a society that does it, and if there isn't then you can just start your own one.
College Parents
The College Parent system is a Cambridge tradition in which all 1st year students are assigned 'parents' who are already at Girton to help them settle in. All Freshers should receive an email or a letter from their parents in the first couple of weeks of September.
College Staff
The Mistress - Prof. Susan Smith
She is in charge. She is new this year, just like you. You should get an opportunity to meet her in Freshers' week when you matriculate.
The Senior Tutor - Dr. Andrew Jefferies
He is in charge of the Girton tutorial system. You have to speak to him regarding bringing groups to formal hall, or organising a party.
The Porters
Lovely people you see lots - get to know them!
Tutorial and Admissions Office
Arrange all applications to Girton and sort out the Tutorial system. Often a good point of contact before arriving in Cambridge.
Computer Officers
Handle computer-related things in college. You will meet them in your first week to pick up your login and email details.
Librarians
Keep the Library running smoothly so you can borrow books, use the computers and do your photocopying.
Maintenance
Leave them a message at the Plodge and they'll sort it.
Cleaners
The lovely people who clean our rooms and corridors. Leave your bin outside your room when you go to bed if you don't want to be disturbed in the morning.
Groundsman
In charge of the college grounds and sports pitches.
