Basketball

There is currently no Girton college basketball team, however there is lots of interest from both undergrads and postgrads and therefore anyone wishing to start up the team will find lots of support around college.

Cricket

Girton College has for the last few years, put out good cricketing sides who have often failed to realise their potential. Last year, after comfortably winning all our group games we came up against strong opposition in the first round of the knock-out stage in the form of Churchill (who boasted several University players) and were soundly beaten.

This year we will be looking to improve on previous years’ performances by progressing further into the knock-out stages, combining the remnants of last year’s side with hopefully some decent fresher talent.

Therefore whether you are an established test legend or back garden cricketer who hasn’t played in years, if you are interested in playing cricket for your college this year feel free to drop me an email. College cricket, although taking place during exam term is not as time consuming as you may be led to believe (games being 20 overs a side) and it’s a great way to escape the library and take your mind off work for a few hours whilst have a laugh with a good bunch of lads!

I will also be looking to organise some nets at Fenners Indoor School at some point if enough people are interested.

Captain: Charlie Scutt (cgs31)

Cross Country

Girton started off well with the University Fresher's Fun run at the beginning of the year being well attended by Girtonians and many Girtonians continued to bump up Girton's place in the league in many of the cuppers races with Peter, Cosmo and Gareth running for many of the race for the mens with us unfortunately finishing last in the first division and Tamsin and Nicola running for the Womens resulting in finishing about half way up the Womens division.

There was also a keen group of (mainly female) runners doing regular Sunday morning runs during Michaelmas and maybe it's something about applying for Girton so feeling the need to do more exercise than entirely necessary but there was a continual flow of students running through the village for the majority of Easter term so lots of potential for next year's cuppers!

In addition Girton hosted a Tea run at the beginning of Easter term which involved some of Girton running club along with many of the University Hare and Hounds running around some of Girton's finest fields followed by amazing carrot cake!

Captain: Tamsin Owen, co310

Football (M)

After a record-breaking season (admittedly for the wrong reasons) last year for the firsts, we're looking for promotion from Division 2. The seconds last year had a more successful season getting to the semi-finals of the Shield, and they will be competing in Division 5. We also have a thirds team, entering Division 7.

So we have something for footballers of all abilities, and hopefully a more successful season ahead.

1st team captain: Simon Tinsley (sjt78)

2nd team captain: Ryohei Nakamura (rn315)

3rd team captain: Ashwin Pillay (ap654)

Football (W)

Last year the Girton women's football team had a very strong season, finishing third in a competitive top division, and this year we hope to build on success! Players of all abilities are welcome, so come along to training even if you've never touched a football before - it's a really fun sport and you'll find yourself improving loads over the year. We will be training once a week, and most games are played on Saturdays.

Captain: Rachey Coy (rhc28) and Miranda Johnson (mslj3)

Hockey (M)

GCHC had one of its most successful season in its history for 2010/11. In the first term we came out on top of a very competitive promotion struggle to finish first in Division 2. This was then followed up by a great performance in Division 1 in Lent Term, where we ended up finishing 3rd overall in the top division's standings. This bodes very well for the strength Girton hockey and hopefully we can build on this effort even next further. We're looking for as many freshers and even second and third years to get involved as possible!

Captain: Matt Hatfield, mh616

Hockey (W)

Women's Hockey at Girton is thriving, thanks to a great season last year. We are now in division 2 and hoping to keep moving up. Hockey is a wonderful team sport, great exercise, and really inclusive to players of all abilities. Most matches are played on Sundays, leaving plenty of time for other Cambridge commitments. Come along whether you're a fresher, second, third year or grad! We're always looking for new players to join our team.

Get in touch with Marie (mk661) or Tasha (nc378) if you want to get involved.

Mixed Lacrosse

Mixed lacrosse has been reborn at Girton College! Having put a team together just in time for cuppers last year, our newly recruited players went on to do very well in the tournament - winning one, drawing two, and losing only one match. With such a positive start, we cannot wait to see what Girton can do when we enter the mixed lacrosee league next year.

Lacrosse is feisty, fast, fun sport - so whether you've played all your school career, or are unsure as to quite what a lacrosse stick looks like, please come along and have a go, we'd love to have you!

Captain: Lydia Barton (lmb85)

Netball

Want to try a fun, exciting and sociable sport? Then netball could be for you! It doesn’t matter if you’re a complete beginner or practically a pro, everyone is welcome! We have 2 ladies teams in the intercollegiate league, one in division 2 and one in division 3. We also have a mixed team recently promoted to division 1! So there is a team for all levels! Matches take place every weekend so no matter what subject you do you’ll be able to make the matches.

Rowing (Boat Club M&F)

Most people decide to give rowing a go at some time or other during their time at Cambridge and many find it to be a highly addictive and enjoyable sport. This means that the Boat Club is regularly the biggest sports society in Girton with numbers reaching up to 100 at our peak. We cater for all abilities from complete novice upwards and are structured so that we can provide the best training possible for all our members.

Last year saw several big moves and successes: we improved our fleet by purchasing two new boats (a ladies' and men's first boats) and repairing an older shell to the point of new; we had two of our men row in the Cambridge University Lightweight Varsity Race, with another reaching the final pair and one of our coxes doing extremely well trialling for the University Women; equally our men's side continues to rise in the Bumps tables and the women are holding on to their place in Division One of May's.

We are looking forward to great successes as we continue to build up our name and hope to see as many Girtonians as possible out and enjoying themselves on the river in the year to come.

President: Ellie Stone (ejs76)

Rugby (M)

Girton men's rugby will be pushing for promotion in to the second division this season and so we're looking for as many freshers as possible to get involved. There is usually at least one game during the week and a weekend training session so you can fuel up on brunch afterwards! The time commitment isn't a huge one and it's a really great way to keep up your rugby (or start) while you're at uni. The team also have a brand new kit for this season! If you have any questions please contact this years captain.

Captain: Rory Duffin (rd390)

Rugby (F)

Women's Rugby at college level is 7-a-side and a great way to get introducedto the sport. Yes it's full contact but it's great fun, and a lot of girls find that they enjoy college rugby so much they go on to play at universitylevel. It's a great opportunity to try a sport that's not normally offered to womenbefore uni so give it a go, it's very low commitment and trainings are at hangover friendly times!

Captain: Kat Smallwood, ks530

Squash

Girton squash is up and coming. Last year a team was entered into the leagues, with most individual matches being won easily. Next year, the team will be moved up a couple of divisions, to better reflect the standard of the players here. The cuppers team, featuring two blues and a player who narrowly missed out on playing for the university 3rd team, came runner up in the cuppers tournament for the second year running, and next year with another returning 3rd team player we are sure to win! We are the only team of any sport probably in the world that can boast of having Storm (3) and Cosmo (5) together in one team, a near unstoppable force!

Captain: Jack Styles, jaqs2

Swimming

Table Tennis

Last season's team established Girton table tennis firmly in the first division of the league, finishing fourth and also enjoyed a good cup run, narrowly losing out 5-4 in the semi finals to eventual winners Trinity.

Captain: Benjamin Katz (bk317)

Casual Tennis Society

Casual Tennis Society is pretty much exactly what it says on the tin! Run in Easter term and meeting once a week (on Friday afternoons) It's open to tennis players of any level- you don't even have to own a racket, I always bring a couple of spares along. It's a very sociable sport and a fantastic way to get some fresh air and de-stress during exam term. It's very low commitment and a completely hassle free way of doing a bit of exercise- the courts are on-site (one of the many advantages of a college that's a bit further out). So, if you fancy a match or just a knock around come the summer months, you'll find people down at the courts on a Friday afternoon!

Captain: Jess Morley, jecm4

Tennis (M)

Girton Men's Tennis is on the up. Having played our first match of the season at the end of Lent Term, dispatching Caius in a convincing victory, we will be looking for more success this term as we progress though the Cuppers Tournament. With four new players on the team, three freshers and our Squash Captain looking to diversify, I think we can look forward to some good years ahead for Girton Men's tennis!

Captain: Cosmo Coulter (cc629)

Volleyball

The Girton College Volleyball Club is a great place to pick up the game of Volleyball if you've never played before or to continue playing at a casual level. It also only requires a minimal commitment. Aside from a couple of beginner sessions at the beginning of Michaelmas term and the possibility of an indoor tournament one weekend sometime during the first two terms all the volleyball occurs during the summer. In Easter term there is an inter college league that runs at weekends on Jesus green in town. It's a lot of fun and not taken too seriously.

Despite our laid back approach Girton has had a good level of success in the Summer leagues over the last few years but due to the fact that most of the team left Cambridge at the end of last year we will be looking for lots of new faces. It honestly doesn't matter if you've never played before as you'll be in the same boat as everyone else.

If you have any questions contact me (Ewan Stephens) on eps26

Water Polo

Water Polo at Girton has a somewhat erratic tradition of later years, but currently enjoys an enthusiatic membership of more than 20 members of college who all player regularly. The team encompasses a broad range of talents, from complete newcomers to several university blues; the basic requirement is an ability to swim and to see the funny side of things (something especially important when looking at some of our results...). We train once a week in the college pool and play in the second division of the college league competition and in Cuppers (essentially a game every 2 weeks overall). Last year we finished cuppers undefeated, including a win over a divison 1 team and a draw with another only to not go through on goal difference, showing a marked improvement by all involved with the
team. A particular mention should go to Tamsin Owen who had never played prior to joining Cambridge, and having debuted with Girton is now Captain of the University Women's Water Polo team. Training is on a Monday at 5:30, at the college pool; All welcome.

Captain: Dan Woolcott (doaw2)

Ultimate Frisbee

The New Thundercatz

So you have never heard of “Ultimate Frisbee”.... Well it is a fast-moving team game that is a sort of cross between netball and American football (non-contact) played with a round piece of plastic. It’s one of the fastest growing sports in the UK and also one of the few that men and women play together at every level. Cambridge has loads of Ultimate going on with a healthy, fun and casual college league that plays throughout the year. Your college team, The New Thundercatz represent six colleges (St Catharine’s, Trinity Hall, Murray Edwards, Fitzwilliam, Girton and Magdalene) so it’s a great chance to meet players from other colleges and play a competitive sport in a highly spirited manner.

So if you’d like to give it a go, even if you’ve never picked up a Frisbee before, please come along and join in. For more information feel free to drop an e-mail to oc253@cam.ac.uk
