Art Society

GAS has a different art activity to try every week, anything from life drawing to claymation, and we're always getting new ideas of what to try from our members. All artistic abilities are welcome, it's just a place to get stuck in with something you might not have done since school, and hopefully some things you've never done before at all. Email acr56 to be added to the mailing list and get more details.

Christian Union

The Christian Union is a bunch of people seeking to share the good news of Jesus with our friends (although we'd love to hear from you if you'd call yourself a Christian or even if you don't!). We meet once a week on Wednesday evenings to have a look at the Bible and encourage one another.

GADS

Girton Amateur Dramatics Society welcomes anyone with just the slightest interest in thespianity (is that a word...probably not...). It doesn’t matter whether you’ve been singing and dancing since you were four or whether you’ve never been on a stage before; anyone can get involved with our productions and we’re sure you’ll have a great time doing so!

GADS does theatre, musicals, stand-up, improv. and plays – or at least that’s how we choose to describe them!

GADS really is a lot of fun, so get keen and get involved by contacting Pippy Wiseman (pkw24)!

History Society

The current Girton History Society follows in the footsteps of many prestigious predecessors. The original Girton History Society, “The One Damned Thing After Another” Society played host to such luminaries as Virginia Woolf who read her work “A Room of One’s Own” to the assembled members. The Society has more recently hosted famous historians such as Richard Evans and Christopher Clark. Sadly the History Society ceased to exist in 2006 but was re-founded in 2012 under the name “One Damned Thing After Another?” Society. Our inaugural meeting took place in Lent Term 2012 and was a discussion of the future of women’s history. We hope to continue in this vein and present several discussions each academic year in order to enrich the academic experience of
all Girtonians, historians and non-historians alike.

Joan Robinson Society (Economics)

The Joan Robinson Society continues its tradition of maintaining a collaborative and supportive relationship among Girton's economists. The society boasts of a number of events every year encompassing those of both an academic and social nature. These include termly speaker events which play host to some of Girton's most successful alumni and Cambridge's greatest economic thinkers, as well as economist formals and the annual economist Christmas dinner.

During the last academic year 2010-11, the main speakers included Tom Crossely, a Cambridge fellow and programme director at the Institute for Fiscal Studies, who spoke about the labelling effect with particular emphasis on the Winter Fuel Allowance,as well as ex-Girtonian, Peter Rutland, a Managing Director at the leading global private equity firm, CVC Capital Partners. Peter spoke about the current economic environment and its challenges to investment in the eyes of a city professional. Finally, in Easter, one of Cambridge University's major minds behind the study of behavioural economics, Michelle Baddeley, delivered an enlightening introduction to this fascinating and new area of economics. Besides the formal activities, the Joan Robinson Society have also engaged in various
social events ranging from meals out to film nights, developing and highlighting the close friendships among members of the course. Furthermore, senior members of the society continue to provide valuable support to the lower years with internship talks and dissertations presentations being delivered by the finalists.

Medical Society

Girton Medical and Veterinary Society (Girton MedVetSoc) is here to give you academic support, as well as broadening you horizon's socially and academically. We do this in a number of ways. Every year we produce a handbook with all sorts of study tips for the first 2 years. This is supplemented by events where needed such as our annual Special Options evening where third years talk to second years about the options they did. On top of this, we are working on support mechanisms to help you out if thinks go down hill, and we will be there to support and advocate for you at every step of the way.

Our social events are regular and varied, giving you the opportunity to mix with the clinical students in the college, and Medics and vets from other colleges. For example, this year we are planning formal dinner and paintball swaps with other colleges ans well as the annual Medic and Vet dinners and a garden Party.

We also arrange several talks per term on topics of interest to medics and vets such as medical ethics, zoonoses, elective experiences of clinical students, etc.

If you have any questions about the society, or about studying Medicine or veterinary Medicine at Girton, then please contact me at cs606@cam.ac.uk

Photographic Society

The Bernie Lee Photographic Society, which has been long-established in College, has seen a few fallow years recently. Girton has the rare facility of an excellent dark-room which can be used for developing roll film, but the dying art of film photography in Cambridge is sadly reflected in an array of out-dated chemicals and expired paper found in the little-known room at the side of the College Bar. However, with the help of Peter Sparks, the Senior Treasurer, and Eleanor Richards, the JCR Curator, a group of students from within the College have come together in their mutual interest in photography and, as of Easter Term 2011, the room, and society, will be re-stocked, re-organised and revived. Inevitably, a large amount of the photography will be digital, for which the dark-room provides a computer, A3 printer, and even cameras and lenses to loan. With the help of the Society’s small bank balance, we hope to help members develop their skills by drafting in experts and talented photographers from across the University, and will once again be utilising the display boards outside the Old Hall to showcase the work of Girton students. As of yet, there is little to report in terms of the Society’s activities, but we hope that the new developments will help to rekindle a community of enthusiasts within Girton who can continue to raise the profile of photography in College and build a more consistent future for the Society.

Poetry

Girton's poetry group meets three times each term, on a Wednesday evening, over wine, in the FDR. The group is relaxed and informal, and is attended by students, grad students, and fellows. In advance of each meeting a number of themes are circulated to all those signed-up to the group's mailing list, Everyone is invited to write a poem in response to any one (or more) of these themes and to submit it anonymously to the group's leader. The poems are photocopied and at the meeting each is read aloud (not necessarily by its author) and its merits are discussed. Usually only about ten poems are produced, but those who don't write are still welcome to come along to the meeting and join the discussion - and many do. At the end of the meeting there is the opportunity to 'own up' to having written a certain poem, but there is no pressure to do so if you want to remain anonymous. Anyone and everyone is welcome.

At the beginning of each year we email all College members, but after this first contact we only communicate themes to those who have asked to be kept informed. If you would like to join our mailing list, please email either Seán Hewitt <seh86@cam.ac.uk> or Sinéad Garrigan Mattar <smg42@cam.ac.uk> and they'll sign you up.
