Access and Academic Officer

Historically speaking, the illustrious universities of Britain have not been renowned for their inclusivity and accurate representation of society at large. Fortunately, the times, they are a changin'. Each College now has an Access officer (me), responsible for increasing the numbers of students from what is referred to as ``non traditional backgrounds``. The access officer forms part of an elite team tasked with making Girton more inclusive, and I also work with other students and staff across the university, and wider community to achieve equality. We run a shadowing scheme, school visits, and other useful services. I'm all about long term engagement with schools and communities to tackle the root causes of inequality in higher education. A good idea, if you want to know more, would be to visit the ``Access`` page on this website, then choose ``prospective students``. Also check out www.applytocambridge.com - it's cracking.

Events and Societies

Arguably the 'one-man band' role on the committee, the Events and Societies Officer has the task of coordinating Girton Sports Teams and Girton Clubs & Societies, as well as organising weekly Ents, one-off 'Ents' throughout the year and the college's annual Summer Garden Party in May week. They also oversee the 'Ents Sub-Team', the trusty folks charged with running the weekly JCR Ents such as quiz night, film night, and Saturday Ents (including karaoke and open mic night). Each term, bureaucracy and weather permitting, we aim to hold three Undergrounds (Ents in the Bar!) where our resident DJs get the chance to bring the house down.

LGBT+ Representative

A big part of my role is keeping the LGBT+ community in Girton entertained. We're a relatively small and informal bunch, but we meet up regularly during term to socialise and often go out to the weekly LGBT+ club night together. I also coordinate events with other colleges' LGBT+ groups, and Girton is always well represented at these mixers! Other than socials, the LGBT+ co-reps are here to supply information and support to LGBT+ Girtonians and we also work with the university's students' union to bring campaigns and large-scale events out to college grounds.
