Spiritual Spaces

Girton has its own chapel within the main college building and regular services and concerts are held there every week. Many of these services are non-denominational, and the chapel and the college chaplain are available to students of all faiths and to those of none. Within the chapel itself, there is a ‘prayer corner’ set aside for private prayer which is always open to students, no matter what their faith. The Chapel Box Room is also available and can be booked by students for spiritual use. There is also a University Multi-Faith Chaplaincy Centre at Merton Hall Farmhouse on Madingley Road, which is available to all Girton students.

There are also a number of dedicated worship spaces in town that cater for practitioners of the major world religions and there are a number of university-wide faith communities/ societies. For more information, please contact jcr-ethnic@girton.cam.ac.uk

Girton students have access to a wealth of material both in the libraries within college itself and also at Wolfson Court. For information about libraries, visit here!

Football and rugby pitches

Girton has full sized playing pitches, as well as some practice pitches. Because we are out of town and have such large grounds, we are one of the only colleges to have all our pitches on site. This means that home matches get excellent crowds, because people don’t have far to walk!

Squash Courts

Girton has its own squash courts, with a viewing platform and an ergo room within. Squash rackets and balls can be borrowed for the Lodge.

Girton has a cricket pitch and practice nets on site.

Conference Rooms

All of College’s Conference Rooms, e.g. the Chapel Box Room (projector and SmartBoard), can be booked out by students when not in use by commercial customers or supervisors. Visit the Catering and Conferencing Office at the entrance to A Corridor Hospital Wing (from the JCR vending machine area) to book a room and book out the key from the Porters’ Lodge.

Swimming Pool

Girton is one of only two college to have their own swimming pool. Ours is heated and indoor, and can be used by any member of the JCR.

Tennis Courts

Girton has two tennis courts in good condition.

Lawrence Room

The Lawrence Room is Girton’s very own museum, housing three major collections: Anglo-Saxon, Egyptian and Mediterranean. The prize of the museum is Hermione, a 1st century Egyptian mummy.

There is a music practice room in D36, and the pianos around College (e.g. Fellows’ Drawing Room, Stanley Library) can be booked out for use by students at the Porters’ Lodge.

Music Tripos students and Music Scholars can apply for a College Music Room outside of the normal JCR Room Ballot procedure by application to the Music DoS.
